Tarheel basketball

Posted by soober at 07:57 AM on October 13, 2005.

I heard midnight madness is going to be soon and i have some free time at work right now so i decided to update this year's recruiting class. Supposed to be one of the best ones ever for UNC very comparable with the class of 2002 in numbers but on paper might be even better.

1. Tywon Lawson: consensus #1 point guard in the nation. Great motor with awesome vision. Skillful. Shooting is supposed to be a weakness but it is definitely an area that can be improved.

2. Wayne Ellington: consensus #1 shooting guard. Simply a Beast. At 6' 4'' a little bit on the short side for a NBA SG but yet there are people that predict he could best NBA player to come out of this class, which includes Greg Oden. That's saying a lot. Not much he can't do.

3. William Graves: Local product. To be honest he has to be the weakest link in this class. Could be the Byron Sanders of this class, but he has potential. At 6'6 240lbs he is a wide bodied SG. Havn't heard much about him but he can definitely be a solid contributor in his junior and senior year. Just not the immediate impact player that Tywon and Wayne will be.

4. Deon Thompson: A 6'8 250lbs center prospect from Cali. He turned heads and showcased his skills in the major summer camps. Before that he was pretty much unknown even in California. No one really knew about him until this summer. UCLA and Ben Howland are kicking themselves over missing out on him but it's their fault. Apparently, one of the assistant coaches labled him as a back-up player to a 2006 PF UCLA commit Jamie Skeen and his mother didn't appreciate it. One recruiting services rank him as the third-ranked Center prospect and 23rd overall. However, most other services rank him in the 50's. So the jury is still out on him. Hopefully he is good and Sean May was supposedly impressed by his skills.

5. Alex Stepheson: Our most recent recruits is another player from California. 6-9 215lbs PF prospect ranked mostly in the 50s. He is built well and has some hops. He will definitely be servicable. Maybe not immediately, though. UCLA is seriously despising us right now for coming all the way to their turf and stealing prospects.

1) lack of scholarship left for 2007

We have one scholarship left and I'm not sure what we are planning on doing with this one. Because if we use this one and no one leaves for the NBA in 2007 then that means we are going to have one scholarship to offer. Something that can bite us in the butt later on. However, Roy is recruiting pretty much one and done players such as Darryl Arthur (#2 PF), Thaddeus Young (#2 SF), and Brandon Wright (#1PF). So, it might not be a big problem if we sign another PF. However, we have a backlog in SF, SGs and this could brew up a potential chemistry problem as players compete for PT. And the thing is that Thaddeus Young is set to announce his commitment on the 24th and seems to be leaning towards UNC. I know it's one of those problems that really is not a problem. However, i do want either Arthur or Wright to join us more so than Thaddeus Young. But then again Young is one beast of a prospect, and according to sources he was tearing everybody up when he took his official visit couple weeks ago. Suppsedly, McCants was even there, too , and Young was toying with him. I'm not sure because i only heard this from a friend. So it's defintely one of those worries you want to have. This class is definitely one of those banner classes and i hope we can top it off with Arthur or Wright or Young. Anyone of them would be awesome. Nonetheless we have a shortage of scholarships for 2007

2) waste of scholarships
We wasted scholarships on two folks. Mike Copeland and William Graves. I think Graves has potential to disprove me later on but Mike Copeland is definitely a late emergency pick up. So everyone, is who is Mike Copeland. Well he is a 6'8 PF from this year's class. We picked him up in mid-august because Roy needed another big body to put in. Because so far we only have Tyler Hansbrough and Byron Sanders as our C, PF. Reyshawn Terry can play the four, too but his natural position is the 3 and he lacks the rebounding skills to play an effective four. Copeland was definitely an emergency pick-up. I don't think Roy would have normally liked to have him on the team but we are in dire straits. I wish we could have saved up the scholarship because i really think the only impact he will have is in fouls. He will just have fouls to give. I know i'm harsh about it but that's my thoughts.

3) log-jam in the 2 and 3 position.

We have way too many SG and SFs. Danny Green, Marcus Ginyard, Bobby Frasor, Wayne Ellington, Reyshawn Terry, and maybe Thaddeus Young. Way too many abled players. PT competition is going to be brutal. It will make them better and bitter. Nonetheless, i still believe in Roy Williams.

Hopefully everyone in Tarheel land is doing well. GO HEELS~~

Oh btw, congrats dookies in advance for the 2006 national championship. I was thinking about it during lunch and there seriously is no other team that has this thing locked up. I would not be surprised if Duke goes undefeated. That's how good Duke is and how every other team has issues. Duke's issues are pretty much potential issues such as injuries. Great coach, #1 SG,#1 C, DEEP bench # freshman class. Pretty much says it all. Congrats. and with this said if you guys don't win it. It will be one of those "biggest upsets ever," which come out on ESPN classics.

working

I've started working at Bain as a research assistant for the past two weeks. I am not sure how much longer i want to work here but so far it's been an interesting experience. People are nice and extremely well-qualified but they also work egregious hours. It looks like they are in finals-mode 24/7/365. They work on the weekdays, weekends, and a lot of times even holiday. I am surprised they don't get burned out and seem like they enjoy their work. Very professional, indeed. Unlike me who is updating during work hours.

I know some people who don' t like consulting and think consultants are useless. I used to agree with this notion as well because i thought clients could do the work that the consultants were doing. But not i changed my mind because i realized, at least in Korea, that the clients really are not as competent as I expected them to be. So they actually are dependent on consultants to support them in projects. The project that my team is currently working on was initially started by the client but they just simply did not have the ability, resources, and knolwedge to complete the project. It seems to be sad but true. Currently, Bain is in recruiting season and i realized ALL the applicants are extremely well-qualified. It got me thinking, if all the well-qualified resources are turning to foreign i-banks or consulting companies, then it's only natural that the client companies are accepting second-tier resources.

On another note, all the foreign direct investment in Korea, especially in the financial markets (e.g Standard Chartered acquisition, Lonestar acquisition, etc.) is starting to get on my nerves, because these bastages are making billions because they get first dibs on everything. They are able to buy first and sell first so us regular folks just watch billions of dollars move away to other companies while these privae equity investors destroy our companies for quick profits. But the thing is i can't do anything about it and the Korean government can't do much either because once we start regulating the FDI flow will ebb. SIGH!!! the plight of the weak

I've arrived in Korea Saturday night and it's been pretty good so far. Church was good and being with family is always good.

Today i went to a adoption agency to volunteer. I plan on helping out here as much as i can before something else shows up. I've been translating letters from adopted children to birth mother, birth mother to adopted parents, etc. etc. from english to korean and korean to english. I don't want to share too much detail but a lot of these letters were very happy but there were some that ALMOST brought me to tears. One letter and adopted girl was asking for her birth-mother and sister to write back to her and asking forgiveness for putting them in a difficult situation.

In this place they also take care of babies that are couple day to couple weeks old before they are sent to a host family until they are adopted. These babies are literally delivered right after they are given birth and then abandoned by the mother/parent. It is sad but yet there is just such an innocence and happiness in these infants. I asked if i can go hold on to one but immediately got DENIED cuz of the possibility that i might have germs and i had cologne on. Babies are so adorable though. So tomorrow, i plan on translating all the letters and then moving on to better things like taking care of babies. I've decided that if i am able to then i will adopt couple babies.

Btw, I'm going to take my physical tomorrow.

What's that smell part II

Posted by soober at 03:24 PM on August 30, 2005.

You know the smell that i was talking about. Well it hit rock bottom yesterday. I went to work in the morning and it STUNK. I mean it STUNK. IT was absolutely terrible. It smelled like a chicken was rotting in the office for the past 10 days ( maybe it did.. hmmmm...) So our company CEO called it a paid day off. There was no way anybody was working with that odor in an office. I think we are thinking of relocating to another office, unless the landlady evicts the mad scientist.

Speaking of the landlady, well she lives in Colorado and i think she flew in to check it out, while everyone was still trying to figure things out. She rolls in riding a brand-spanking new BMW 7 series. She comes out with a bang out the gates and has her game face on like she is gonna take care of business. Inside, i was thinking "there is no way she is gonna stay there for more than a second." I mean i was surprised that she even tried to go in. Well sadly enough, She takes a half step into our door, smeels the odor and her facial expression changes to a face of defeat and silently marches back inside her car and stays there. In Counter- Strike language, she got PWNED!

Oh btw, the mad scientist took his grievances to the media.  What an idiot. He needs to have his own ventilation system.

what's that smell

Posted by soober at 08:54 PM on August 24, 2005.

Most of you know that i work in a office in Cary. Well from the start of the work there was this aweful stench outside our office. I mean sometimes you went outside to leave for lunch or home and you get a whiff of the odor and suddenly it feels like you've been transported back to the ghetto areas of Seoul ( you guys know what i'm talking about) but at least 10 times worse. I mean the smell was putrid. However, i did not take much note of it and thought that it was just coming from the garbage dumpor something because it was only there once in a while. Me and my co-workers would talk about it and tried to figure out what it was about but didn't put much thought to it, until recently.

About two to three weeks ago, as i walked into the office i smelled something putrid. That's right, the smell started seeping into our office. It was aweful. I mean it was AWFUL. iT STUNK. It smelled worse than an entire football squad in camp without showering for the entire two weeks. The smell lasted for about a day or two and then left. However, it would come back again. Sometimes it was so bad we had to leave all our windows and doors open so that the smell can somehow go out and wait until it was tolerable. We called the building owners and called the city of Cary to figure out what the heck was wrong. Well we realized that our neighbors nextdoors were causing this problem. The owners did not do much about it because they did not want to get sued. So I had to endure the smell for couple weeks.

It would not have been a problem if it were the smell but people started to get sick. They were nauseous and had stomach problems and fever. Everyone had the same symptoms. So our CEO finally got fed up and forced the city of Cary and the building owners to do something about it.

So this morning, as i walked into the office i saw two fire trucks and about 15 firemen. I went and talked to the secretary and she told me that they were looking into our neighbors to see if anything was toxic. Nothing came up but the company had to shut down their operations for the day.

I never knew what the company did because they did not have a name in front of their door. However, i knew all along the company was a little quirky because  right inside of the door there were two medievel armors and  the  workers sometimes  brough in  big coolers inside the office.  Well you will not believe what the company was doing in their office. They were trying to turn dead chicken into fuel. Yes you heard me they were trying to discover ways to turn chicken into fuel. The water coolers were full of dead chicken and the aweful stench was the smell that came during the experiment. Supposedly they are going to eventually try to use garbage and turn it into fuel but have not attempted to. I mean everybody in my office was in disbelief at what they were trying to do in a regular office building without any proper ventilation. The thing that really gets on my nerves is that the city of Cary allowed this to happen. Granted that they did not know that it will smell this bad but even so, i could not believe they allowed them to do experiments in an unprotected environment. These people are so serious about it that it's cultish and downright freaky.

These people need to be stopped
